Mumps alert from the University of Iowa
Since July more than 100 cases of mumps have occurred at the University of Iowa and the numbers have been increasing in recent weeks. Cases are primarily occurring in undergraduate students. As a result the Iowa Department of Public Health, the University of Iowa, and Johnson County Public Health, are recommending that University of Iowa students who are less than 25 years of age should be given a third (or "booster") dose of mumps vaccine (MMR vaccine).

Everybody now has the option of selecting the days during the week that work best for their schedule for keeping winter fit!
To maintain ongoing supervisor costs, VPRD is asking all participants to contribute a nominal daily admission charge of 50 cents per day.
Kapucian and Pettengill to Host a Provider Managed Care Meeting
State Senator Tim Kapucian of Keystone and State Representative Dawn Pettengill of Mt. Auburn will host a managed care meeting for health providers of House District 75 on November 12th in Van Horne. This is an opportunity for health care providers to meet their state lawmakers, ask questions, offer suggestions and tell them of their experiences.

With upcoming holidays and the flu season upon us, LifeServe Blood Center is thanking donors who plan on helping boost the blood supply this November.
Holiday traditions and travel or the flu may keep regular donors from giving blood this month, but the need for the lifesaving liquid does not let up. To ensure hospital patients can live on to celebrate many more holidays, every blood type must be on the shelf at all times.
VPRD accepting registrations for Fall Aqua Aerobics
The Vinton Parks & Recreation Department continues to accept registrations for our upcoming Fall Aqua Aerobics session held Wednesday and Sunday evenings at the Iowa Braille School's indoor pool. Class times are from 5:30-6:30 PM on October 25, November 1, 8 and 15 in addition to class times from 6:30-7:30 PM on October 28, November 4, 11 and 18.

Binge Drinking and Breast Cancer: Know the health risks
Simply said, heavy or binge drinking can increase your risk of breast cancer. What is binge drinking? For women, binge drinking is consuming four or more drinks in a sitting, with a drink described as a 12 ounce beer, 4-5 ounce glass of wine, or 1.25 ounces of liquor.
With October being breast cancer awareness month, it seems a great time to point out that heavy drinking can impact women negatively.
